2020 Bon Vivant Chardonnay

The Bon Vivant Chardonnay, as its name implies, is in a class by itself. Each year, as we taste through our cellar, certain barrels rise to the top. It could be their sense of decadent power, or their graceful precision and minerality that draw us to those barrels. Consequently, each time we revisit these special barrels, the blurry image of the final composition begins to take form. Ultimately, in the end, it is our yearly masterstroke: our most complex and layered wine. With a full spectrum of ripe fruits, layers of floral aromas are gilded with the brilliant spice from new oak. The Bon Vivant Chardonnay is a true masterpiece from our La Belle Promenade Vineyard.

Tasting Notes

Pronounced aromas of Meyer lemon, confectioners sugar, lemon tea and daphne flowers leap from the glass. The palate is sophisticated with warmth and spice from 100% new oak aging balanced with a creamy mouthfeel and attentive acidity. Flavors boast of grapefruit, lemon tart, wet stone, green apple and baking spice.

96 Points, International Wine Report: "Selecting only the best barrels from the vintage, the 2021 Bon Vivant sports a gorgeous light, but moves to a medium lemon core with a silvery rim in the glass. Starting off with some crushed rock and flint minerality on the nose, it follows up with notes of grilled lemon, fresh white peach, warm allspice, and hints of cedary herbs. Elegant and refined on the palate, the lush mouthfeel pops with stone-fruit goodness and shades of white grapefruit citrus, ending with a toasty cinnamon aspect on the back palate. Vineyard Notes

La Belle Promenade Vineyard, our treasured estate site in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, spans 40 acres of organically dry-farmed vines planted in 2014. Situated between 700 and 850 feet in elevation, its northeastern and southwestern exposures bring balance and unique character to our wines. The vineyard’s volcanic soils vary between a fractured basalt layer in the southwest and deep Saum soils in the southeast, adding complexity to each harvest. Planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Grüner Veltliner, Gamay Noir, and Aligoté, La Belle Promenade reflects the rich diversity of its terroir, yielding wines with vibrant floral notes, bright acidity, and a hint of the orchard fruits that once flourished here.
